For some reason every time I
go to Starbucks I have to have a venti. A grande just doesn’t cut it because I
always want more, and I like the bigger cup. So I pay the $5.36 for my venti coffee
and go about my day. The only problem is, towards the end of my drink, it
starts to get lukewarm. I can’t stand it! I like iced coffee, and of course I
like it hot. But there is nothing worse than right in the middle. So to ensure
I get my money’s worth, I always have to chug that last little bit of lukewarm
coffee just to get it over with.
Just as being lukewarm
doesn’t work for my White Mocha, it doesn’t work in our walk with Christ
either. Sometimes we find ourselves going through the motions in our faith. We
claim to be a Christian, yet we don’t live a life completely devoted to Jesus
Christ. We think we are “good with God” because we go to Verve every Wednesday.
Maybe we have a good week and go to church on Sunday morning too. Or maybe we
post a picture of a Bible verse on social media. We are doing what “good”
Christians do, so everything’s good, right? Wrong. What I have found from someone
who is lukewarm in their faith is this: They make their relationship with Christ
about themselves, and what they are doing. Their current status with
God depends on what they have done that week. To be lukewarm is to be
complacent in your faith. Instead of pursuing after Christ whole-heartedly, you
are going through the motions. There is no passion, no love, and no change in
your heart. Not only is God not impressed with this type of faith, He is
repulsed by it.

Revelation 3:14-16
Going through the motions of church or a Christian lifestyle
is not what it looks like to truly be a follower of Jesus. In this verse we
learn that since you are neither cold nor hot, He will vomit you out of His
mouth. It is absolutely disgusting to Him. I don’t know about you, but I never
want to live a complacent lifestyle that disgust the one who died in my place
and took away my sin and shame. Instead, I want to passionately pursue the
heart of Jesus Christ everyday. I want to challenge you to remain focused on
your relationship with Christ everyday, because nothing good comes from
something lukewarm.
