If someone were to ask you to describe yourself,
what would you say? An athlete or a
drummer? A cheerleader or a Jesus
freak? A sinner or a musician? An artist… or maybe a mess up? What would it be? Write down the words that come to your mind
(keep this near you; we will come back to it).
More than likely, whatever word(s) you wrote down
are words that others have used to describe you. Maybe it was your parents, or your cousin,
your sibling … or maybe you gave yourself that title. Whoever it was, quite frankly… it doesn’t
matter. What they say doesn’t matter.
They did not make you. They are not your
creator.
You see, going to someone other than your Creator
to find out who you are is trivial; it’s pointless. Just like you would not take a Honda civic
car to the creator of Panera bread and ask them what they think about the
car. It doesn’t matter because they did
not make Honda, therefore they do not know what their purpose is or what they
are made for. Sure, they may have some
car knowledge, but they do not know the ins and the outs of the car like the
actual makers of the car do. You follow
me?
Likewise, in order to know who you are, you must
refer to your Maker. So, that’s what
we’re going to do.
If there has been a time in your life when you
confessed with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believed in your heart that
God raised Him from the dead (Romans 10:9), then the Bible says that you have
been saved. When God looks at you, He no
longer sees your sin, but He sees His son; the perfect sinless Jesus.
Here are a few more descriptions of what the Bible
says you are and what God sees when He looks at you:
-NEW: 2
Corinthians 5:17
-FREE: Galatians
5:1
-NOT A SLAVE TO SIN: Romans 6:6, Galatians 4:7
-RIGHTEOUSNESS
(right with God): Ephesians 4:22-24
-ALIVE: Ephesians
2:4-5
-JUSTIFIED
(to declare innocent or guiltless): Romans
3:24
-ACCEPTED
BY CHRSIT: Romans 15:7
-NEAR TO GOD: Ephesians
2:13, Colossians 1:21-22
-CHOSEN: Ephesians
1:4
-HOLY: Ephesians
1:4
-BLAMLESS: Ephesians 1:4
I could go on for days and give you more words
that the Bible uses to describe you as, but I’m only allowed a certain amount
of words….and I don’t want to lose your attention. :)
Now, what I want you to do is on that same piece
of paper you used earlier to write down the words that described yourself, mark
those out and replace them with either one of the words above or something else
that God says about you. The next time
you allow what others say about you define you or give you your purpose,
remember- you are not who they say you are.
They did not make you. In order
to fulfill your calling in this life, you have to know WHO you are.
