New Creation

Spencer Moreau

As some of you know, I have been working at Starbucks for a couple of days per week. If you work for Starbucks (like any other food chain I’m sure), you are encouraged to try every menu item as to easily describe drinks to someone who is having trouble deciding on what they want. We have cold and hot drinks that are both equally great, but after some time passes, they begin to taste much worse. Being lukewarm is a dangerous state for someone who professes Christ as their Lord and Savior. Both a hot brewed coffee and an iced blended frappucino both taste great, but somewhere in between is just horrible! The same goes for a Christian. Living a life for Christ requires that you be all in. It is impossible to be okay with your life of sin while also living your life for Christ. In the book of Revelation, God makes it very clear of His stance on a person who lives a life of lukewarm: “I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!” (Revelation 3:16) In the Greek (the original language John wrote this book in), the word for “spit” here is “emeo”, which more closely means to “vomit”. So you could say that a lukewarm Christian makes God sick. That is a harsh thought, but it is scripture!

READ JAMES 4:1-10

My heart in writing this devotional is not to condemn or bring guilt upon anyone, but more to encourage you to pursue Jesus. As we just read, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” I am not saying that you will never sin or that you will never be tempted. Living for Christ is not about being perfect (it’s impossible), but continually moving closer and closer to becoming more like Christ. When thinking about all that Christ sacrificed for us, it should give us a longing and passion to live for Him. It can be hard when everyone around you lives differently, but I can promise you that in any and every situation, Jesus is better. Sometime today, take the time to listen to this song by Austin Stone Worship called “Jesus is Better”. Don’t play in in the background on your way to school or while doing homework, but take a 5 minute break out of your day to close your eyes, sit, and just listen. Listen to the lyrics and the meaning behind them. I have put a couple of links to it below as well.

If we want to live like Christ, we must look like Christ. Make God your one and only King.
