If you have ever been to church camp, on a mission trip, or part of a big church service like today at VERVE, you know exactly what I’m talking about. The Holy Spirit, the third part of the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), is the person of God who is constantly at work in our lives today. The Holy Spirit convicts our hearts of sin that doesn’t belong, spurs us on to righteousness, leads us in difficult situations, and more. But the truth is, at the mention of the Holy Spirit, a lot of Christians get nervous. In fact, entire denominations have split over what they believe about the Spirit of God.
I heard the Spirit best described by a local Dallas pastor named Matt Chandler (The Village Church) in one of his sermons. He said to picture walking with the Spirit of God like walking with our earthly father as a young child. There are times when you walk peacefully and consistently, holding your loving father’s hand, and that truth is enough for you. Then, there are times when your father surprised you, lifts you off of your feet, swings you around, and gives you a huge hug and a kiss, telling you how much he loves you. There are times the Spirit of God will calmly and peacefully guide us as we strive to be like Christ, and there are also times the Spirit will sweep us off of our feet and do something unexpected and unexplainable (The “high” we get at church camp). Both are acts of love from the Father, just different. I am aware that it is a whole chapter, but this scripture I chose for today talks about what Life in the Spirit looks like and about God’s incredible love for us.

My devotional today doesn’t end us much with a challenge or action, but more of a reflection. Put some time aside today to reflect on what you read in Romans 8. Read it again, and let its truth lead you to living and becoming more like Christ in the weeks ahead.
