I WANNA PIMP SMACK THE GAS STATION ATTENDANT

Hadley Baker

We all have weaknesses, right? What is yours? Bad temper? Judgmental? Lust? Well here is one of mine. I ALWAYS (and I mean ALWAYS) get lost. I am convinced that I was born without whatever chemical is in your brain that gives you a sense of direction. Not only do I get lost, I get lost using a GPS! How depressing is that?

I went to college at Southwestern University in Waxahachie. My freshmen year I was nominated to be on the homecoming court. All the other nominees and I drove to the botanical gardens in Fort Worth for the photo shoot. We were all decked out in our suits and dresses (I have to say my swag was on point). Our faces were numb from cheesin’ for the camera all day. I was so ready for this to be over with and around 3:00 PM I had a good excuse to leave early—football practice!

As I was walking toward my vehicle I asked one of my classmates “Hey, how do I get back to the school?” They said, “Oh, it’s super easy. Just get on 35 and it’s a straight shot back.” I was so relieved. I thought it would be difficult, but this sounded super simple. I mean how hard can driving straight on one road be, right? So I got in my vehicle and took off. Sure enough, there it was—Interstate 35! I hopped on, set the cruise, and began rocking out to some tunes (you should have heard my air guitar solo...EPIC). I kept driving and driving thinking that at any moment I would be arriving. But as time went by I realized that something wasn’t right. I didn’t see any familiar landmarks on the highway. I began to get nervous...“Surely I am not lost again!” I thought to myself. But then I saw a sign that let me know I was in BIG trouble. It told me that I was 15 miles from Waco!!! What in the world! I was more than an hour away from my school in the OPPOSITE DIRECTION! How did this happen? I was so frustrated and angry! In addition to wasting time and gas, I was also gonna miss football practice. I knew my coach would not be happy.

I stopped in at a gas station and asked the attendant behind the counter, “Can you tell me how to get to Waxahachie?” He looked up and said “Oh, it’s super easy. Just get on 35 and it’s a straight shot.” I remember thinking “I am about to smack this guy in the face!” Then I remembered that I can’t fight and that this guy would probably kick my butt (even though he was old). I told him I had been driving on 35 and had not passed Waxahachie. That’s when I found out that there are TWO Interstate 35s in Texas. Did you know that? It’s true. There’s a 35 East and a 35 West. The whole time I had been on the WRONG highway. By the time I got back to my school it was 7:00. I missed football and dinner. A day that had started off great had ended on a very frustrating note.

READ PROVERBS 3:5-6 AND JEREMIAH 29:11

Have you ever felt like this in your life, like you have no idea where you’re going? No clue about your purpose on this planet? Why you’re here, what you’re supposed to be doing, what’s your destiny, etc? Something that will make you feel better is that this is very normal. Most people at some point in their life feel like they are just “lost” on the highway of life—driving around with no destination in mind. But here’s the good news: if you have trusted Christ as your Savior, God already has you on the path you are supposed to be on! Just continue to acknowledge him (pray to him, seek his will, keep an open heart) and he will put you where you are supposed to be (Proverbs 3:5-6). He has an incredible destination for you (Jeremiah 29:11). Turn when he says turn. Slow down when he says slow down. And if you get off the path, the Holy Spirit (the divine GPS) will let you know and you can do a u-turn. On this road trip of faith the road is often unfamiliar and you may not where you are gonna end up. But God does. You are not lost. You are exactly where you are supposed to be. Just keep driving.
