We are humans. We all at some point make the
mistake of thinking that the universe revolves around us. I remember a time in
my life when I had to have everything my
way, and when it wasn’t, I was extremely moody, uptight, anxious and no fun
to be around. Just being honest here! For some reason I always thought that the
world revolved around me and my desires, my dreams, and my expectations. When
it didn’t, my world came crashing down EVERY
SINGLE TIME. Talk about an
emotional roller coaster! I allowed this to consume me and affect my
relationships with people. I did not realize the toll this was taking on me,
and the damage it was doing in my life.
By the grace of God, when He saved me He slowly
began pulling me away from this mindset. He used people and circumstances to
show me that putting myself first is not Christ-like and by no means glorifying
God. If I wanted to follow Him whole-heartedly, putting myself first needed to go. Was this an overnight change? Was
it easy? Absolutely NOT! Looking back, I have to laugh at some of the awkward
and unpleasant situations God used to show me that the world does not in fact
revolve around me. Allowing God to change my heart in this area might have been
messy, but now knowing that the world doesn’t revolve around me is the best
thing I could ever hear.
Read
Romans 8:5
Following Jesus isn’t easy because it means
putting your fleshly desires to the side and whole-heartedly desiring what God
wants. For some people, this is too high of a price. This completely goes
against what we naturally want to do. It may cost you a certain relationship, a
social outing, time, your reputation, or even your future. If you aren’t
sacrificing anything, are you really
following Christ? Why would we ever believe that following Jesus means
continuing to pursue our fleshly desires?
When I thought the world revolved around me, what I didn’t realize was the misery
and slavery in this type of mindset. It held me hostage because I made myself
god. I was never satisfied or fulfilled, only restless. When you allow Jesus to
be Lord over your entire life it will cost you, but it’s worth it. Allow Him to
take the pressure off of you.
Delight in knowing the world doesn’t revolve around you! This is GOOD
NEWS!
