This
afternoon while preparing for an upcoming VERVE service, I got hit with a
question from a church member who was up there. She asked, “When did you know
that God called you to music?” It really took me a second to think about it. It
wasn’t like there was a time where God painted giant letters in the sky like a
neon billboard saying, “I’VE CALLED YOU TO VERVE YOUTH CHURCH TO LEAD WORSHIP
FOR STUDENTS,” nor did I get a letter in the mail from Jesus telling me to begin
music ministry. How does God “call” people?
I
believe that God has already called us from the moment we made the decision to
follow Him. You could even say we all basically have the same calling. In fact,
the calling He has on our lives is written in His Word. “Go and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Teach them to observe all that I have commanded you. And I will be with you
always, even until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20). Jesus gave us a commission, calling us
to make disciples, baptize them in the Body of Christ, and teach them to pursue
Him and become more like Him everyday of their lives (discipleship). There are
difference ways we can do that. For me, God gave me a passion and ability for
music from a young age. As I grew up, doors began to fling open for
opportunities to lead worship in different venues (churches, mission
organizations, etc). One opportunity led to another, and I met Hadley at a
Chick-Fil-A in 2011 where he shared his heart for students. The passion that
God gave me for music was matched up with the passion that God gave Hadley for
teaching and building relationships, and with the leadership of an awesome
team, here we are now, Summer 2015. We both play a part in that original
calling: making disciples, baptizing into the Body of Christ, and discipleship,
but in the context of our callings individually.
I
believe that God’s plan for you is to fulfill His commission with the passions
and desires He put into your heart. Don’t you think God made you the way He did
for a reason? I challenge you this summer to pursue the commission boldly, with
the passions and desires He’s gifted you with. Now get out there and tell
people about Jesus!
