Covenant is a powerful word. It’s a binding promise that
requires commitment from each side involved. When we enter into a covenant with
the God of the universe, you better believe that it’s going to require intent
and dedication. I have learned over the past few years that there is NOTHING on
this earth that will satisfy the way Jesus’ overwhelming love and unending
peace can satisfy. All the temptations of this earth pale in comparison to the
wholeness and worth that comes from following Jesus.
That being said, that intimacy and joy cannot flow freely
when there is a life filled with sin, doubt, and rejection of God’s promises.
James 4:4-10 speaks VERY clearly on this. Take a look and see what you think.
James 4:4-10
“You’re cheating on God. If all
you want is your own way, flirting with the world every chance you get, you end
up enemies of God and his way. And do you suppose God doesn’t care? The proverb
has it that “he’s a fiercely jealous lover.” And what he gives in love is far
better than anything else you’ll find. It’s common knowledge that “God goes
against the willful proud; God gives grace to the willing humble.” So
let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him
scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit
dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom,
and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious.
Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your
feet.”
If that doesn’t make it easy for you, I don’t know what
will. Our covenant with Christ requires hard work, weakness, brokenness,
humility, and accepting that we will never
have it all together. When we allow Christ to work and do His thing, it
opens up our hearts to a completeness that will NEVER be found anywhere else in
the universe. Trust Him. Let it go. (Frozen fans, stop singing.) Ask Him each
day to humble you. Ask Him to remove you from the equation so that your
actions, words, and thoughts are intertwined with His. I can promise that you
will find a joy so powerful, nothing can compare.
