Who would you call your best friend? As a kid, my best friend’s name was Brett Lagerberg (Cool last name right?). Even though we were little kids who couldn’t drive or transport ourselves, we did absolutely everything together. It was odd to go a day where we didn’t see each other. He spent nights at my house, I spent nights at his house, we would build spaceships out of Lego’s, shoot each other with rubber band guns, and more. Then, when his family decided to move into the same neighborhood that my family lived in, we hung out even more.... We did “tying skateboards to bikes and crashing them at the bottom of a big hill” type stuff. As we grew older and our interests changed, we grew apart and eventually stopped hanging out.
Have you ever just felt distant from God? Has your faith in Him struggled because you feel like He can’t hear you? There is a quote that has been floating around from different authors and pastors that says, “You are as close to God as you want to be.” Meaning, drawing close to Christ takes some effort on our part. It takes some work, just like any relationship. Just like Brett and I growing up, we were great friends because we mutually wanted spent time with each other. And wouldn’t it be weird to see a dedicated husband and wife who never talked or did anything with each other unless one needed the other for something? Christians have a bad habit of doing the same thing; Putting God on a shelf until they need Him. That sounds like a pretty selfish approach to a relationship, huh? And yet, we still do it. It’s almost like we do everything in our power, then go to God as a last resort.
READ JAMES 4:1-10
What if it was the other way around? What if when we encountered a difficulty in our life, we went to God FIRST? From this passage in James, re-read the first part of verse 8: “Come close to God and God will come close to you.” Our closeness to God takes some effort on our part. I can guarantee that He is eager for you to pursue Him. Why don’t you try it out? Schedule extra time in your day to put your focus on your relationship with God, and see what happens.
