BURN THE BRIDGE, BURN THE SHIPS; NO RESERVES

Zach Vertz

When you gave your life to Christ (assuming you have) you were born again. Not literally born and birthed from your mother again, that would just be weird! You were born again spiritually. Being born again means you once lived apart from Him but now you have given your life to Him. You no longer call the shots. You let Him call the shots. When we have been born again in Christ, we have been raised from our dead state spiritually to newness of life. And because of this, we are to renounce the world and its dominion over us. This is what Paul urges every believer to do in Ephesians 4:17-19. We were also slaves to our own fleshly desires, and now as believers we are to “put off” fleshly things and “put on” the things of the Spirit (4:22- 24). Being born again means we do a 180-degree turn. We head in the opposite direction of the way we once were when we were not following Christ. Sever your ties to the world!

Why do so many Christians who were saved go back to their old lives they were living before? The answer is they never burned their bridges or burned their ships.

They still had their reserves.

I have a friend who gave his life to The Lord a couple years back. He was on fire for God, he was attending church two times a week, and he began to listen to only Christian music. He even began to tell his friends about Christ! But then one day he didn’t show up to church. One day he started to listen to his old secular music. One day he began hanging out with that one friend again and slowly started building the bridge of his old life back again. You see, it wasn’t just a one-day decision to leave God behind but it was all the “look backs” here and there. His old life is now his current life once again. Jesus died to save Him from that lifestyle and now he went straight back to it. You see how foolish that is? Till this day we stay in contact to some degree and he will openly admit he knows what he had with God was better than his current life. But now he’s gotten himself in such a hole he can’t get himself out. You see, he will admit life with Christ is so much better. He wishes he had burned all his ships and bridges to begin with! That old life has nothing for us. It’s meaningless and it leads to nowhere. Living for Christ in this life equals a better life in the here and now and even better it has an eternal purpose! It’s a win-win. Many people say, “You have to learn from your own mistakes” while I believe that may be true for some, I also believe you can learn from others’ mistakes.

Read COLOSSIANS 1:13-14 & Philippians 3:13-14

From here on out live your lives without regrets! Live for Christ and you will be able to say, “I’m glad I did!” rather than, “I wish I had.”
