THE CALL OF THE HARVEST

Ivie Oghakpor

A few Sundays ago in the 11:30 service Hadley began the breakdown of the book Colossians. During the service he stated that Christ has a general plan for all of our lives, as well as a specific plan. The general plan is that we follow and spread the word of God, whereas the specific plan is our role we play on this side of heaven. Within the Bible there are countless roles that the people of God are called to (like Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt). As the children of God, God has every plan to prosper us and not to harm us, to give us hope and a future—Jeremiah 29:11. After going on my first mission trip back in June, Christ has changed me tremendously. To be honest before leaving for Atlanta I thought my faith couldn’t get any better; just to come to find out that I was wrong. Before Atlanta I was sold out on spreading the word of God wherever God would place me, although while I was on the trip I learned that there are thousands upon thousands people dying each day who do not even come close to the Word of God while alive. I have heard the numbers before, but it did not become a reality until we went to apartments in ATLANTA, GEORGIA in the UNITED STATES of AMERICA that children as young as two have never even heard the name of Jesus. It was in these moments that I had to step back and ask myself how serious am I taking the call of Christ. The truth is this, at this very moment, as you read this, people are dying who never heard the Gospel.

Read MATTHEW 9:35-37 and JOHN 1:19-23

I work for Starbucks, and it has to be the busiest place on the face of the earth between the hours of 7 AM and 11 AM about every day. People wanting their extra hot no foam lattes or bacon sandwiches with no bacon; honestly the madness could go on. Sometimes I have to step back, and ask myself, “Where are all these people going? Because the way that last lady talked to me it didn’t seem like she was on her way to heaven.” Having done that so many times I can just imagine that this must have been the way Christ felt in Matthew towards the passing people. Then there is John the Baptist, who was called even before he was born, who as soon as he came out the womb hit the ground running to help Christ build up the kingdom. John never stopped even to his death. He understood that the harvest is plenty and the workers are few. With that being said, have you heard your specific calling? Because we are all called to spread the word of God no matter the place or role—so challenge yourself!

Who is it that YOU can share the light or Word of God with today?
